Exchanging at Macy's

I was listening to eTown when I pulled into the parking spot at the mall. I think Nick and Helen Forster have a great gig and are so inventive and accessible. They make a big-time contribution to social and environmental issues and have a terrific public service, the “e-chievement” awards, made to people who help make their communities a better place. And of course they love the music. Today’s guest was the great Thurston Moore from Sonic...

“take me with you," said the dog.

It’s New Year’s Day once again, amazingly. Here we go again…I spent New Year’s Eve at the beach with my sisters Cathy and Molly and three adorable little boys. Lots of noise, fun, wine, cookies, “Please read this to me…”

My friend Rob designed this beautiful blog for me and my resolution is to use it, fill it, write things for you. I love to hear from you so please tell me who you are and how you are and what you think. And maybe what...

Saving some summer

Autumn is two-thirds over today, the Ides of November having passed and Thanksgiving on the horizon in five days. The impatiens and geraniums in my window boxes are still blooming and I hate to put them in the garden compost. After the downy mildew disaster of last year, I’m especially anxious about saying good-bye to the impatiens.

AirB&Me

Things I would never do: parachute jump, zipline, parkour, rent my house on airb&b…which doesn’t apply? I’ve stayed at airB&b’s and had a great time, and wrote up good reviews for my host. My brother and his wife went to France last year — he’d never heard of airb&b but after thinking about where they’d stay for their eight weeks, decided to research airb&b and found the most amazing and gorgeous places for much less than they...

September 11, 2001

20 years have gone by. The other day Molly reminded me that I’d left her a voice message that morning, saying I was ok. She didn’t understand until she turned on the TV. I left a message for my sister Lucy as well. She, too, was baffled. I couldn’t get back to NJ from Manhattan for two days and when I did, we went to a candlelight ceremony at the harbor in our town to honor the 147 souls...

Auntie Vin

My visit with Auntie Vin on the occasion of her 75th Jubilee celebration

You might enjoy this. It’s an email I sent to my girlfriends — Beth was in my class for 12 years and her sister Mimi was a few years older and we are all very close. Their aunt is 92 and celebrated her 75th anniversary of being a nun and she invited me to her special day. She didn’t invite the family because they’d been at her other anniversaries. So I wanted to...

Easing the Passage of Time, Part Three

Molly is living with Lucy and is pretty low so there’s a lot of TLC and emotional chicken soup-ing going on. She is slowly getting responses from FEMA and her own insurance agent. She has appointments w heating, electric, plumbing guys starting today. She will be fine and her house will be a lot sturdier and nicer when all this is over and done with. I think that part of what is

Easing the Passage of Time, Part Two

November 9

Good news! We got electricity at the Powell Street Arms two days ago. None yet in Chapel Hill. But 6” of snow and ice Weds night, which caused many trees in the area to crack and fall — the snow was so heavy.

Some of you have asked about pre-storm and how we all wound up where we landed.

Sunday, Day 1 of the actual storm wasn’t too bad but the crush of expectation was intense, sort of a combination of those...

Easing the Passage of Time, Part One

Ok so you are probably wondering what we did and have been doing in the dark, especially in the days right after the storm. Well, I already mentioned tea and red wine, didn’t I?…

I will parse out tidbits of the fascinating activities in several stages…here’s the first.

Lucy has a big fridge and a large freezer compartment on the bottom. She is an occupational therapist so her trade is helping people figure out ways to do...
