All purpose COVID-19 newsletter: June 7

We have made it, as individuals and families, towns, states and country, through sad, terrible and, somehow, encouraging days and nights over the past 11 weeks. Life is forever changing and hopefully for the better.

Here are some stories that are life-affirming, about doing good.

Dr. Kato

Among other things that made me cry, you recall seeing Dr. Tomoaki Kato, the liver transplant expert who contracted the Corona virus, at the virtual healing concert at Columbia. He was discharged after more than two months of treatment for COVID-19

Here’s his interview regarding the state of the union of liver care:

Serious and true to their brand

It’s Pride month. Skittles commemorates it:

Art

The Barnes Foundation is doing daily art talks until the galleries reopen. Here’s one about something that a lot of us can relate to these days:
Art Talk on Paul Cézanne’s “The Card Players”

South Africa/ Denis Hurley Centre

No budgets, props or training. Just cameras and the will to make a short film, told by homeless men who wanted to narrate their own stories: “No Kings of the Street’ is a cautionary tale about life on the streets, told by the homeless themselves.

What We Remember

My sister Molly is a psychotherapist and artist. She has her own practice, and writes a wonderful blog, calming and witty. Of course she’s doing her work by Zoom.

Aurora Humanitarian Initiative

The Aurora Project is a remarkable organization; every year they award a prize for humanitarian efforts; here are the extraordinary stories of this year’s nominees: https://auroraprize.com/en/aurora/article/summary_home/15093/a-great-lif…

Music

If you love Phish, they’re airing (for free) some of their vintage concerts on Tuesday nights: https://phish.com/news/announcing-dinner-and-a-movie-tuesday-evenings/

Geminis

My darling niece Meghan and her cool husband, JP, have back-to-back birthdays.

Yesterday was our beloved aunt Pat’s birthday.

Today is a double header.

Happy birthday to my fab brother Stephen; he’s a Renaissance guy and can seemingly do anything.

And also happy birthday to my adorable niece Margaret Mary, who just got her Ph.D. in neuroscience from UC San Francisco and is working with the Carolina Hurricanes in the crazy new field of data analytics.

Donations

I am donating to several local food pantries and will include links to yours if you’d like. They are still in desperate need.

Have a peaceful week.
