All purpose COVID-19 newsletter: May 8

Hello,

Well, we’ve made it through week 7. I bought some nice marmalade right before Christmas and ran out of the jam I’d had today. So I wanted to open the jar of marmalade. But try as I might I couldn’t open it. The high point of my day (maybe my week — we’ll have to see what happens in the next few days) was asking the FedEx man to open it for me and he did and we gave each other a virtual high five…

Today is the 75th anniversary of VE Day / Victory In Europe Declared (1945)
President Truman and Prime Minister Churchill declared victory in Europe, celebrating the defeat of Nazi Germany. As part of the celebrations today, Prince Charles led the nation in two minutes of silence this morning.

Have you heard of Captain Tom Moore? He’s a 99 year old British WWII veteran who wanted to raise funds for the National Health Service by walking 100 laps in his garden by his 100th birthday. Well, he turned 100 last week; his charitable endeavor captured the hearts of the nation and his fundraiser has raised more than $40 million. These are some of the thousands of birthday cards he received!

Virtual Healing Concert

One of the men I admire most is Dr. Craig Smith, of Columbia University who writes a compelling essay from the hospital every day. One of his colleagues is Dr. Tomoaki Kato, a pioneer in multiple-organ transplantation, pediatric and adult liver transplantation. Dr. Smith posted this yesterday:

Donations
I am donating to several local charities. They are in desperate need. Here’s a good one:

The Parker Family Health Center is a free health care facility where Monmouth County residents who do not have health insurance or the ability to pay for medical care can be treated with dignity and compassion.

Rolling with the Punches
My sister Molly is a psychotherapist and artist. She has her own practice, and writes a wonderful blog, calming and witty. Of course she’s doing her work by Zoom.
